How to land your first live DJ set — from profile to stage

Getting your first gig is about more than talent. It's about being findable, professional, and easy to say yes to.

Every DJ remembers their first real gig. The nerves, the setup, the moment the music starts and you realize this is actually happening. Getting there is the hard part — and it has less to do with your technical skills than most people think.

Here's what actually gets you booked.

Be findable

This sounds obvious, but most DJs aren't. If someone searches for a DJ in your city and your name doesn't come up anywhere with a professional profile, tracks to listen to, and contact information — you don't exist to them.

Your Soundtura profile is your foundation. A clear photo, a short bio that says what you play and where you're based, and two or three mixes or tracks that give people a sense of your sound. That's all you need to be findable.

Make it easy to say yes

When someone is looking for a DJ for an event, they're managing a hundred other things. The easier you make it to book you, the better your chances.

That means: respond quickly, be clear about what you need (equipment, space, timing), and don't make people chase you for basic information. A professional, responsive musician who's slightly less technically impressive than someone impossible to reach will get the gig every time.

Start small and local

Your first gig probably won't be a 500-person club night. It might be a bar, a private event, a restaurant. That's fine. Every gig is a reference, a recording, and a relationship.

Play the small gigs well, treat them like they matter (they do), and the bigger ones follow.

Build relationships, not just bookings

The music industry runs on relationships. After every gig, stay in touch with the people who booked you. Share what you're working on. Show up to events where your community gathers. Be someone who's genuinely part of the scene, not just someone who shows up to play and disappears.

Your first booking is closer than you think. Get your profile right, be professional, and start showing up.
